Wondering where to stay in Hakone on your next trip to Japan? This guide is going to cover everything you need to know including the best areas and accommodation options!

Hakone is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns to visit in Japan – and one of my favourite trips from Tokyo. Famous for its hot springs (onsen), fantastic museums, and striking views of Mount Fuji, Hakone has tons of places to explore.

Thanks to its location, it’s easily accessible from Tokyo, Yokohama, and Shizuoka and can be easily visited on a day trip. However, for the best experience, you’ll want to spend at least a couple of nights here – especially when staying at an accommodation with an onsen.

Although Hakone is a relatively small town compared to Japan’s bustling urban centres, there’s still a wealth of options when it comes to deciding where to stay. To help with your decision, I’ve put together this guide which will cover the town’s six best areas!

In a Rush? Best Places to Stay in Hakone

Don’t have time to read the whole article? Below, I’ll include a quick overview of the best areas and accommodations in Hakone.

If you’re visiting this charming town for the very first time, I’d highly recommend staying within Hakone Yumoto & Tonosawa. It’s not far from the train station and you’ll have easy access to nearby attractions.

Those who’d prefer to be at one with nature might prefer staying in Motohakone. It’s located along Lake Ashi – from here, you’ll be treated to striking views of Mount Fuji.

For families, I’d say that Sengokuhara is your best bet, while Gora is famous for its hot springs! You’ve also got Kowakudani which is the place to stay if you’re after a traditional atmosphere, and Miyanoshita is known for its tranquillity.

IMPORTANT: Most hotels and ryokans in Hakone don’t open up bookings until around 3–6 months before the date. If none of the hotels have availability, you may be too early.

1. Hakone Yumoto & Tonosawa – Best Place to Stay in Hakone for First-Time Visitors

Best for first-time visitors

Why Stay in Hakone Yumoto & Tonosawa?

These two neighbouring areas are situated right along the Haya River and the natural beauty here is breathtaking. Considered to be the “Gateway to Hakone”’”, Hakone Yumoto is the area’s tourist centre.

Tonosawa is just next door. No matter which one you choose, you’ll be staying in a central location so will have easy access to nearby attractions.

There are plenty of awesome things to do here, like admiring the Hien Waterfall, visiting the Hakone Town History Museum, and having some fun at Forest Adventure Hakone.

Aside from its tranquil setting, you’ll have a cultural experience here as you’ll get to visit temples, relax in an onsen (one of the best things to do in Japan), and see people wandering around in costumes from the 19th century.

Another great reason to stay in Hakone Yumoto & Tonosawa is that you’ll be super close to the train station. You’ll have no problems arriving in town from the larger cities such as Tokyo or Yokohama.

Downsides: Accommodation here can sell out quickly as it’s a popular location. For this reason, you’ll want to book in advance if you can. But remember that most hotels in Hakone don’t open up rooms until 3–6 months in advance – so keep an eye on the availability.

Where to Stay in Hakone Yumoto & Tonosawa?

When it comes to accommodation in Hakone, these two neighbourhoods have a lot to offer. There are a variety of options including traditional Ryokans and holiday homes, so there’s something for everyone.

Here are my recommendations for these areas:

Ryokan – Hakone Yumoto Onsen Hotel Kajikaso (3*)

Boasting Japanese-style rooms, two hot spring baths, and breathtaking views of the surroundings, this place has so much to offer. 2. Motohakone – Best Place to Stay in Hakone for Nature

Best for nature and scenery

Why Stay in Motohakone?

Motohakone’s scenery is on another level! It’s located along the edge of the beautiful Lake Ashi (also known as Lake Ashinoko) and offers spectacular views of Mount Fuji and Mount Hakone.

Boasting lush forests, rolling hills, deep blue waters, and of course, views of towering volcanoes, the vistas here are unparalleled. However, there are plenty of attractions to be found in this area too.

The most popular place has to be the iconic Hakone Shrine which is located within Lake Ashi. There’s also Onshi-Hakone Park, the Narukawa Art Museum, and Kuzuryu Shrine Shingu.

Don’t forget to go on a pirate ship cruise along Lake Ashinoko either as you’ll be treated to fantastic views of Mount Fuji.

Aside from the variety of things to do in Motohakone, there are plenty of other reasons to stay here. That includes the variety of accommodation options and hot springs that you can visit, as well as traditional teahouses.

Downsides: This is one of the more popular and touristy areas of Hakone so hotels can be pricey. It can also get extremely busy here during public holidays.

Where to Stay in Motohakone?

The great thing about staying in Motohakone is that many of the hotels are located right by the lakeside. This means you’ll be able to get rooms that feature stunning lake views, although prices will naturally be higher for these.

Here are my recommendations for this area:

Hotel – The Prince Hakone Lake Ashinoko (4*)

This hotel is set on the shores of Lake Ashi and offers hot spring baths that overlook it. Featuring beautiful gardens that offer views of Mount Fuji, an on-site spa, and a free shuttle bus to and from JR Odawara Shinkansen Station, it’s a great base. There’s even a restaurant on-site, where you’ll get scenic views while you dine.

There are natural hot spring baths on-site too, and you’ll be just a short walk from Hakone-En Ropeway Station.

3. Gora – Best Place to Stay in Hakone for Onsen

Best for hot springs and scenery

Why Stay in Gora?

There are so many reasons to stay in Gora, but the highlight has to be its onsens! Onsens are a big highlight in Japanese culture. Often referred to as the “Hot Spring Town”, this place is home to five hot springs. Each onsen offers a unique experience as they have distinctive colours, so try to visit more than one!

Thanks to its great location within Hakone, you’ll have easy access to an array of attractions including Gora Park, Doryoson Hakone Branch Temple, and Nicolai Bergmann Hakone Gardens. Better yet, the neighbouring areas have plenty of places to visit too.

Aside from the variety of things to do, Gora is also known for its beautiful landscapes. So if you’re looking to relax and appreciate the views, then this may be the area for you!

As it’s a popular neighbourhood, there’s always a buzz around here but it never seems to feel too overwhelming. Maybe that’s partly due to its charming location.

Considering Gora only came about during the 1990s after a hot spring was discovered, it’s very well equipped to cope with the number of people that stay here.

Downsides: There are some cheaper options with Gora, but many of the hotels are 4* or 5*.

Where to Stay in Gora?

Gora is the place to stay if you’re looking for a luxurious getaway. Here, you’ll find a variety of 4* and 5* hotels/ryokans, each offering extensive facilities and beautiful rooms. If you don’t mind spending a bit extra, then you’ll have plenty of places to choose from.

Here are my recommendations for this area:

Ryokan – Emblem Flow Hakone (3*)

Located near Gora Station and Hakone Gora Park, Emblem Flow Hakone is in a great location. It offers access to a hot spring bath, a restaurant & bar, a lounge, and a snack bar. There are a variety of room options too including family units, so there’s something for everyone.

4. Sengokuhara – Best Place to Stay in Hakone for Families

Best for family-friendly hotels and outdoor activities

Why Stay in Sengokuhara?

If you’re travelling as a family, then Sengokuhara is quite possibly the best option for you. Boasting natural beauty, a variety of outdoor activities, and a relaxing atmosphere, this area will take your breath away.

First of all, there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in Sengokuhara, with many of them offering rooms sleeping 4–5 people. However, there are so many more reasons to base yourself here.

For one, Sengokuhara isn’t as touristy so it’s much quieter compared to the likes of Hakone Yumoto and Motohakone. You’ll be stunned by the sheer beauty of this area, with its rolling hills and forests.

Some of the best places to visit here include the Sengokuhara Susuki Grass Fields, the Pola Museum of Art, and the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum (Glass Forest).

What’s great about Sengokuhara, is that you’ll also have easy access to the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands, Hakone Country Club, and the Mount Kintoki Trailhead.

With a variety of fantastic ryokans/hotels, plenty of restaurant options, and lots of things to do, this wonderful place has so much to offer.

Downsides: Although relatively quiet throughout the year compared to other areas in Hakone, Autumn here can feel busy thanks to the beautiful colours on display.

Where to Stay in Sengokuhara?

With a variety of ryokans and hotels in the area, Sengokuhara has plenty of accommodation options. You’ll find lots of family-friendly rooms that sleep 5+ people, meaning there’s space for everyone, and many of the ryokans offer excellent facilities.

Here are my recommendations for this area:

Hotel – Hotel Green Plaza Hakone (4*)

On our first trip to Hakone, this is where we stayed and we LOVED it. This hotel offers a variety of standard and Japanese-style rooms, so there’s something for everyone. We decided to go with a room including a private onsen and Mount Fuji view – it was fantastic!

Even better, there are open-air hot spring baths at this hotel, and they also offer views of Japan’s most famous volcano.

5. Kowakudani – Best Place to Stay in Hakone for Traditional Atmosphere

Best for a traditional atmosphere and Japanese culture

Why Stay in Kowakudani?

If you’re looking for a more authentic experience in Hakone then make sure you stay in Kowakudani. It’s not as popular with tourists, so you can experience traditional Japanese culture at its very best.

Kowakudani is a more residential area so you’ll truly get to see how the locals live. Home to onsens, traditional Ryokans, and fantastic hiking trails, you won’t be short of things to do here.

Some of the most popular attractions include Chisuji Falls, the Okada Museum of Art, Sanno Shrine, and Kowakidani Horaien Gardens. You’ll also be just a short walk from the Hakone Open-air Museum – one of the town’s most iconic attractions.

You’ve also got plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in Kowakudani, as there are walking trails nearby. Don’t forget to spend time at Kowakudani Onsen either, which is located within Mikawaya Ryokan.

This 24-hour free-flowing onsen offers you the chance to relax while enjoying spectacular views of Mount Takanosu and Mount Asama.

Hakone is one of the most popular destinations in Japan and there aren’t many areas where you can escape that “touristy” feel. However, Kowakudani is one of them.

Downsides: Accommodation in this area seems to be pretty expensive. To get the best deals, try to be flexible with your trip dates.

Where to Stay in Kowakudani?

In Kowakudani, you’ll find a variety of traditional ryokans and many of them are incredibly beautiful. Whether you’re travelling as a family or with your partner, you’ll find plenty of accommodation options. Just keep in mind that some of the Ryokans seem to be more costly in this neighbourhood.

Here are my recommendations for this area:

Ryokan – Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan (3*)

This ryokan is located in one of Hakone’s most beautiful areas and the views from some of the rooms are simply breathtaking. With an on-site restaurant and access to a hot spring bath and open-air bath, this place has a lot to offer. You’ll also benefit from a shared lounge, coffee shop, bar, and garden area.

6. Miyanoshita – Best Place to Stay in Hakone for Tranquillity

Best for nature, scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere

Why Stay in Miyanoshita?

Home to Miyanoshita Hot Spring, this area is a great place to base yourself while in Hakone. People have been visiting this hot spring since the Edo period – it’s well-renowned for being an onsen hotspot.

Despite this, the area itself has retained its peaceful atmosphere and tranquillity which is rather impressive. It’s not very touristy, and you’ll even find plenty of traditional buildings here that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Some of the best places to visit within this area include Kumano Shrine, Fujisengen Shrine, and Sotoshu Yoshokuzan Jousenji Temple.

Another reason to stay in Miyanoshita is that you can easily reach the more popular neighbourhoods of Hakone-Yumoto and Gora by train. That way you can still visit the town’s other destinations, but you can stay here and appreciate the peace and quiet.

If you base yourself here, you won’t be short of dining options either, as there are traditional eateries, Western restaurants, and bakeries in this area.

Downsides: This area seems to be more limited when it comes to available accommodation options.

Where to Stay in Miyanoshita?

From 2* budget stays to luxury 5* Ryokans, Miyanoshita has an option for everyone. However, the choices do seem to be more limited compared to other areas so just keep that in mind. With properties sleeping between two and 10 people, you can stay here no matter the size of your group.

Here are my recommendations for this area:

Ryokan – Tsukinoya (2*)

This Ryokan is one of the most budget-friendly options in Miyanoshita and offers Japanese-style rooms that sleep up to six people. There are three natural hot springs on-site and these can be reserved for private use, but you’ll need to do this at check-in. This place has been around since 1911 so feels incredibly authentic!
