The Complete Guide to PSLE in Singapore

The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is an annual national examination taken by Primary 6 students. It is an important checkpoint for students as it can determine which secondary school they can enter. With the new changes to the PSLE scoring system, more parents and students worry about how it will affect their scores and secondary school allocation. Fret not, MindFlex Home Tuition has compiled the ultimate guide to the latest PSLE syllabus and all the information you’ll need to know about PSLE in Singapore, together with multiple free resources to help PSLE students excel!

1. An Overview of the PSLE

During the PSLE, every primary school student will be tested on at least four subject fields that cover their language, mathematical and scientific proficiency, knowledge and reasoning. English, Mathematics, Mother Tongue Language, and Science are the 4 main subjects students are required to take for the PSLE. The PSLE is held annually in October and will be taken by all candidates in their final year of primary school.

PSLE is the first major national examination for primary school students. Sitting for the PSLE is definitely not an easy feat, and thus it is crucial for students to be well prepared. Excelling in PSLE is not only about completing assessment books and memorising concepts in the textbook, students also need to master other key examination skills, such as having good time management and having a clear understanding of the scoring and answering system..

It is paramount to know when to seek assistance to close any learning gaps and clarify any doubts. Here at Mindflex, we have over 25,000 experienced Primary School Tutors who can help your child excel in PSLE confidently!

2. PSLE Scoring System (UPDATED)

The PSLE Score is derived using the sum of the four AL scores across the Standard and Foundation level subjects. Each PSLE subject will be graded using 8 Achievement Levels (ALs), with AL 1 being the best. The PSLE Score ranges from 4 to 32, with 4 being the best possible total score.

Students will be placed in the Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) course, based on their PSLE Score. Starting from Primary Five, students will receive their school examination results in ALs to help students familiarise themselves with the new scoring system.

For students taking Foundation subjects, that subject will be graded AL A to AL C. For the purpose of Secondary 1 posting, AL A to AL C will then be mapped to a Standard level subject to derive a student’s overall PSLE Score.

4. PSLE Tips and Resources

4.1. PSLE Tips

4.1.1. Develop a Study Plan!

Having a plan is a frequent piece of advice that is offered to everyone, but adhering to the study plan is the crucial part. Developing a PSLE study plan helps to mentally prepare students for the revision they are going to have for the next few months. Once the examination timetable is out, take note of all the examination dates. For PSLE, the oral examinations come first, so start preparing for them early. The study plan should also allocate more time towards a student’s weaker subjects so they can have sufficient practice and revision in the lead-up to PSLE.

4.1.2. Set Goals

Setting goals provides the direction to achieve them – it helps motivate students and is an effective measure of progress. At the age of 12, students may not have a clear job prospect yet, so start by setting short-term goals. Start by exploring with your child what secondary school they are hoping to get into, and what Co-Curricular Activities they might be interested in.

Then, set academic goals that can help you achieve their short-term goals. It is important to set specific goals to measure progress. An example is ‘I aim to achieve an AL 2 for the English PSLE exam’, which is clear and easily understandable. The study plan should include specific goals to move towards accomplishing the ultimate target. A goal with a deadline, such as “Complete Nan Yang Primary School Primary 6 Maths paper by next Sunday,” will make it simpler for the student to meet the goal because it is direct and detailed. With goals that are precise and achievable, it will motivate students to stay on track and reach their final goal.

4.1.3. Understand and Analyse Mistakes

Doing a lot of past year examination papers will not guarantee any progress unless students understand the mistakes they made and how to avoid making the mistakes again. At this stage, it is key to ask for help to clarify any doubts. Students may approach their teacher directly for help after identifying a particular subject or topic they are weaker at. There is no shame in asking for assistance as after all, it is only through understanding our mistakes that we can begin to improve!

4.2. PSLE Resources

4.2.1. Practise Past Year Papers

It is paramount that students equip themselves with other materials and past-year papers to prepare themselves for as many types of questions that might appear during the actual PSLE. At MindFlex, we understand how costly obtaining additional exam resources may be. Hence, we have consolidated past-year examination papers from different schools and made them available for you to download for FREE!

Download the PSLE papers here.

4.2.2. Reach Out for Additional Academic Support for PSLE

At MindFlex, we understand that it is easier said than done to incorporate the aforementioned tips. Oftentimes, students may face difficulties in a particular topic and potentially fall into a slump. Therefore, it is important to know when to ask for help and support. Another valuable PSLE tip is to engage our Best PSLE Tutors who will dedicate their time and efforts to provide additional academic help that is tailored and customised to every student. Mindflex has experienced, qualified and competent PSLE Tutors that will be able to assist students in identifying their academic strengths and target their areas of improvement.

With different schools’ past-year papers and assessment books, students will be able to make use of these materials to revise and prepare for the national examinations. Our PSLE Tutors will also conduct mock tests before every exam to allow students to familiarise themselves with the examination conditions, effectively ensuring that students become more confident during the PSLE. With the Best PSLE Tutors in Singapore, PSLE students can be assured that they are in good hands.

4.2.3. PSLE Examination Papers

The PSLE Examination Book is an annual publication that compiles the past few years of PSLE Singapore examination questions, published in collaboration with the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board. Attempting the questions from previous PSLE papers would reveal the types of questions asked over the years for the PSLE and allow students to notice any trends in questions. Students are able to choose between the topical or yearly, depending on their desired area of focus. To target specific chapters and strengthen fundamentals, the Topical PSLE Examinations Book would be a better fit. On the other hand, the Yearly PSLE Examinations Book would be useful for timed practice and to gauge whether the student is ready for the PSLE.

5. How to Choose the Right Secondary School after PSLE

5.1 PSLE Cut-Off Points

The new PSLE scoring system will be implemented in January 2021, it is important for students and parents to be aware of the cut-off points of previous years after receiving your PSLE results. The PSLE Score ranges for individual secondary schools are generated from students’ PSLE results and school choice patterns at the previous year’s S1 Posting Exercise. They reflect the PSLE Score of the first and last student who have been posted into each school under the AL system. Use the PSLE Score ranges as a reference when shortlisting secondary schools that would be a good fit for the student’s overall learning needs.

For Government-Aided Schools, the cut-off point ranges from PSLE scores of 8 to 22 for the Express (O-Level), 7 to 9 for Express (IP), 21 to 25 for Normal (Academic), and 26 to 30 for Normal (Technical).

For Autonomous Schools, the cut-off point ranges from PSLE scores of 8 to 15 for the Express (O-Level), 7 to 9 for Express (IP), 21 to 24 for Normal (Academic), and 26 to 30 for Normal (Technical).

For Independent Schools, the cut-off point ranges from PSLE scores of 8 to 10 for the Express (O-Level), 6 to 8 for Express (IP).

5.2 Location

When choosing which secondary school to go to, consider the distance from home. Ideally, the school be should be as close by as possible. As school hours will be longer in secondary school as compared to in primary school, be sure that the travelling time and journey will not tire the student out. The time spent travelling can also be directed towards other productive or recreational activities, all of which are beneficial to the student.

5.3 Programmes, Subjects and CCAs offered

Different secondary schools in Singapore offer different programmes, subjects and CCAs to develop your child in various areas. Explore the CCAs and learning programmes offered by different schools and find the one that matches your child in their areas of interest and develop their potential.

Direct School Admission (DSA)

Direct School Admission (DSA) is a program in Singapore introduced to primary 6 and secondary 4 students to be guaranteed admission into a secondary school or junior college respectively. Students apply for DSA before taking the PSLE based on a wide range of talents such as Sports and Games, Visual, Literacy and Performing Arts, Debate and Public Speaking and more.

To explore secondary schools based on location and the programmes, Co-curricular Activities (CCA) and subjects that they offer, visit SchoolFinder.

5.4 Affiliation to Tertiary Educations – Junior College (JC)

It is never too early to plan ahead. Choosing the right secondary school may help your child secure a spot if they choose to continue their tertiary education by going to a Junior College.

For secondary schools affiliated to junior colleges, students are allowed to get 2 bonus points during their Secondary 1 (S1) posting process. Do note that students have to place the affiliated junior college as their 1st or 2nd choice during the Joint Admission Exercise to be eligible.

5.5 School Culture

Often overlooked, the school culture directly affects a student’s learning environment and experience for the next few years. After receiving the PSLE results, start visiting school websites and open houses to get a sense of the school’s culture, ethos and environment.

6. Secondary 1 (S1) posting process

The Secondary 1 (S1) posting process takes place once the PSLE results are released. The S1 Internet System (S1-IS) opens for 24-hour online submission from 11.30am on the day of PSLE results release. Submit your child’s top 6 preferred school choices online within the next 7 calendar days.

Things to Note when Submitting School Choices:

    • Consider at least 2 to 3 schools where the student’s PSLE score is better than the school’s COP in the previous year
    • Use all 6 options with a range of COPs so that the student is more likely to get into a school of their choice
    • Rank your preferred school higher in your submission, for a better your chance of being posted into that school
  • Why does the order of the school choice matter when there is a tie-break?

For example, Bryan and Mary are vying for the last place in School A.

They:

  • Have the same PSLE score.
  • Are both Singapore Citizens.
  • Bryan listed School A as his first choice and Mary listed it as her third.

In this case, Bryan will be posted to School A as he had ranked School A higher than Mary in his order of school choices.

The posting results will be released via online, by SMS, and through your child’s primary school. If your child is not placed in any of their school choices, they will be posted to a school with remaining vacancies based on their PSLE score and registered address.

These are AL1 to AL8 (AL1 is the highest and AL 8 the lowest) for Standard level subjects and ALA to ALC (AL A is the highest and ALC the lowest) for Foundation level subjects. The PSLE Score is derived from the sum of the subject scores, ranging from 4 to 32.

What happens if I fall sick during the PSLE examination?

Do not show up for the examination if you are ill (a fever 38.0°C and higher or showing flu-like symptoms). Please be aware that candidates who are ill or who have a fever or flu-like symptoms will not be allowed into the exam locations. You should visit a doctor and inform your teacher immediately. SEAB will follow up with your teacher.

Will my child’s Preliminary Examinations result be taken into consideration in the event that he/ she is absent for PSLE?

The student has to submit his/her medical documents to the Singapore Examinations & Assessment Board (SEAB) through the school if he/she falls sick. SEAB takes into account the adverse or unforeseen circumstances in which a candidate sat for, or missed a paper, to ensure that he/ she is still fairly assessed and not disadvantaged.

Can I take the PSLE if I am hospitalised?

Yes. If you are hospitalised or suffering from contagious diseases, you must inform your school as soon as you see a doctor. When you are certified as medically fit to take the exam by a licensed medical professional and your request to take the exam is submitted through your institution to SEAB prior to the start of the examinations, arrangements will be made for you to take the PSLE.

How much does the PSLE examination cost?

For Singapore Citizens, the PSLE examination is free-of-charge.

What is the minimum score to enter a Secondary School?

A student who obtains a PSLE Score of 26 to 30, and scores an AL 7 or better in both English Language and Mathematics – or AL B or better at Foundation level for these subjects – can progress to the Normal (Technical) course in secondary school.

What do I do if I fail my PSLE?

If you fail your PSLE, you can either retake PSLE one year later or you can advance to a vocational school. Vocational education training also allows students to begin their career with their specifically-chosen industry.

If my child meets the school’s indicative cut-off point, does that guarantee my child’s admission into the school?

Meeting the indicative cut-off point of the school does not guarantee a child’s admission into that school. The indicative cut-off point varies from year to year. The indicative cut-off point is the score of the last student admitted into the school of the previous cohort.

If there are two or more students with the same PSLE score vying for the last places in the school, a tie-breaker will be applied in the order of citizenship, school choice order, and computerised balloting.
